Nutz & Bolts
Overview:
Hi everyone, welcome back to the series.
Let's get right down to it.
You'll remember that in the last section of Part 1 - "Concept of Design", we left off with a project to do that would be used here, in Part 2 - "Nutz & Bolts". So now, that is where we will continue from.
In this month's part of the series, we'll be going over ways to build the individual shapes that make up the overall design of our Interface. Now keep in mind here that some of you may have some fairly odd shaped designs worked out. In that case, you may have to use a tad more brain power to figure out how to construct the 2 dimensional 'primary' shapes that will eventually make up the overall shape of your irregular design. But i'll be showing ways of creating a lot of different shapes, so hopefully you'll see some here that you can use for your designs.
Once we've finished creating some 2D shapes, we'll work on ways to convert our shapes into 3D forms. This will involve using one, two or all of the 3 following methods:
- layers & gradients
- the emboss filter
- and the lighting effects filter
In my experience i believe that #1 (layers & gradients) has the most potential of the three methods. After experimenting for a while with each, you should choose the one that you feel works best for you, and explore it to it's fullest potential.
To help you understand how you can apply the above methods to your own larger designs, we'll be creating a mini Interface here to work on as we go along; learning the techniques that you'll later apply to your own Interfaces. When doing the mini project here today, keep in mind that it's more important that you pay attention to the techniques and methods used to produce the various effects you'll see. Try not to be overly concerned with getting the 'look' just right. These techniques can be applied to a whole lot more than just Interfaces.
Once we've finished the mini Interface exercise, we'll look at a few ways of embellishing it with textures and adding colour to it.
With all that said, let's turn the page and get started.
