"The Shape of things to come..."

Creating more shapes, starting with the Lasso tool.

Creating shapes with the Lasso Selection tools:
  1. Freeform PolygonA Freeform Polygon
Created by using the Lasso tool and loosely drawing a shape.

  2. Straight-Edged PolygonA Straight-Edged Polygon
Created by using the Polygon Lasso tool and loosely drawing a shape.
Hybrid ShapeCreating Hybrid Shapes
Here's one example of what you could make by combining the Hourglass and Oval shapes. The oval was simply put on top of the hourglass and the whole thing was duplicated 2x and the duplicates stacked on top of each other. Experiment doing this youself and see what larger shapes you can create by combining some smaller shapes together. The possibilities are virtualy endless. Let you imagination run wild.

Pill ShapeA Round Cornered Rectangle (or pill shape)

I've saved this one until now because it involves using both the Circle and Rectangle shapes. This shape can also be created by applying the Smooth command (under the Select/Modify menu) to a rectangular selection, but i find that method to be less than perfect.
If you want perfect 'pill shape' results, do it this way:
a) Create and fill a rectangle with black.
Pill Shape Exampleb) On another layer, create and fill a perfect circle (hold the Shift key while using the Elipse selection tool) that's the exact same height of the rectangle, and move the circle so that it sits half on and half off one end of the rectangle. Duplicate the circle layer, and position the duplicate circle over the other end of the rectangle.
c) Merge the circle layers down* until all three shapes are on the same layer, which will be the rectangle layer.
to TOP* To merge down: click on the layer you want to merge, click on the arrow at the top-right side of the layers palette, and from the pop-up menu choose Merge Down. Take notice that when you use the Merge Down function, if your layers are set to different Blend modes, all merged down layers will lose their blend mode and adopt the mode of the last layer they're merged on to. The only way to preserve the Blend modes of multiple merged layers is to use the Merge Visible function in the layer options palette.

TEST QUESTION!
Ok i've waited until the end of this section to give you a problem to solve. Solving this puzzle will help you to use your skills of Photoshop and your imagination. Both of which are needed to create those 'mind-blowing' Interfaces we all want to make. :?)>
Octagon ShapeSee if you can figure out how to make a perfect Octagon shape. I'll give you one tip here: an octagon is nothing more than a square with the corners cut off. Think about that when you're trying to create one. Also, it's not as tough as it seems, and there's no 'trick' involved.
